Storage Tips
Storage units like all buildings are not air tight and just like you can get crawly critters in your home, you can also get them in your storage unit. Here are a few tips to ensure your stored items stay clean, safe and secure while at our storage facility.
- Pack items in plastic totes with air tight lids. Totes are tough enough to withstand extended stacking and chew proof unlike their cardboard counterparts.
- Never, ever store food inside your storage unit as it attracts rodents and bugs. Check kitchen appliances, pots, pans and storage containers for food crumbs before storing them in your unit. Never eat inside your storage unit.
- Cover mattresses and upholstered items like chairs and couches in plastic.
- Remember these units are not climate controlled so store your items in plastic containers that lock out humidity and condensation.
- Storage facilities do not insure your items so make sure your items are insured. Storage insurance usually covers against water, theft, vermin, fire and much more. Check your renters' or home owners' policy to see if you need any additional insurance on your unit.
- Ensure your unit is properly CLOSED before installing your lock.
Sometimes doors look closed but are not securely latched. Lever should
be all the way to the right before adding the lock to your unit. Pull up
on the door to verify door is properly latched as an unlatched door
will eventually pop open, letting critters in.
- Purchase a quality lock to secure your unit. A disc lock is the most secure lock you can purchase for your storage unit as it can't be easily cut.
